The Colonie girls basketball team did something no other team could do this season — beat Averill Park.
Tehresa Coles hit the go-ahead free throw with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lead the Garnet Raiders to a 63-62 victory over the Warriors in Thursday’s Suburban Council South Division game.
Unlike their first meeting — a 78-38 Averill Park victory last month — Colonie (14-2 league, 16-2 overall) never allowed the Warriors to get on a good run, thanks to strong offensive performances by Coles, Sydnie Rosales and Jaclyn Welch. The trio was responsible for 49 of the Garnet Raiders’ 63 points, which helped Colonie keep up with Averill Park’s high-powered offense.
Rosales led the way with 19 points, with Coles contributing 17 points and Welch adding 13 points. Katie Duma paced Averill Park (15-1, 17-1) with 26 points.
Colonie finished the regular season by winning its last three games, starting with last Friday’s 46-39 victory over Bethlehem. Coles netted 11 points, and Amie Jefferson added seven points in the defensive battle.
The Lady Raiders then used a balanced attack to defeat Mohonasen 54-40 Tuesday. Coles and Jefferson each scored 12 points, Rosales contributed 10 points and Kelly Dillon added 11 points.`
