The Shenendehowa boys swim team continues to prove it’s one of the best in New York.
The Plainsmen placed at least one swimmer in the top eight of every individual event on their way to winning last weekend’s Long Island Invitational. Shen finished with 433.5 points, more than 30 points ahead of runner-up Saint John’s Prep.
Shayne Buckley and Jake Johnson each won individual titles for the Plainsmen. Buckley finished first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:56.97, while Johnson took first place in the 100-yard freestyle in an All-American consideration time of 46.69 seconds.
Johnson’s victory in the 100-yard freestyle helped him over-come a loss in the 50-yard freestyle to Shaker’s Frankie Dyer. Dyer, who was seeded second, swam an All-American qualifying time of 20.85 seconds to pull away from Johnson, who placed second in a time of 21.47 seconds.
Johsnon and Buckley later teamed up with Taylor and Troy Nichols to lead Shen’s 400-yard freestyle relay to victory in a time of 3:15.41.
Troy Nichols added a pair of top-three finishes for Shenendehowa. The senior placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.83, and he finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:44.14 to earn 34 team points for the Plainsmen.
Shenendehowa’s 200-yard medley relay team of Johnson, Buckley, Troy Nichols and Adam Goodcoff placed third at the Long Island Invitational in a time of 1:40.46.
Ballston Spa placed 15th out of 29 teams at the statewide meet with 109.5 points.
Mike Barno led the Scotties with a pair of top-five finishes. The senior was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (49.10 seconds) and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.50).
