The Niskayuna town board will be voting on a resolution to appoint John Lubrant as Police Chief at the upcoming town board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
Town board members spoke about the appointment of Lubrant who has served as a member of the Niskayuna Police Department for over 27 years, starting as a patrolman in 1982. For the past six months Lubrant has worked as the interim chief for the town and held the rank of Lieutenant in the force prior to that.
Town board member, Democrat Denise Murphy-McGraw, made a point to talk to members of the force and spend time with Lubrant to better understand his leadership style in deciding her upcoming decision on the resolution.
I am pleased that he is willing to accept the position of chief, formally, for the first time, said McGraw.
Town board member, Democrat Julie McDonnell, spoke to the respect Lubrant has obtained from his fellow officers and the respect he has gained throughout the town.
`He has the respect of his fellow officers and myself,` said McDonnell. `I think its supported throughout the town.`
After joining the department in 1982, Lubrant was promoted to detective in October of 1987, followed by a promotion to Sergeant in 1995. In august of 1996, John was promoted to Detective Sergeant and reached the rank of Lieutenant in December of 2001, according to a press release from the town. Newly elected town board members and sitting board members both agree that Lubrant’s work for the town over his career has the qualities necessary to be police chief.
`I totally support his nomination and I look forward to his swearing-in ceremony,` said town board member Jon McKinney. ` I expect it to be well attended.`
`We are very pleased that John is willing to accept this position as Police Chief. He has done an excellent job as Interim Police Chief during the past six months, and I believe that he will serve the residents of Niskayuna well as our next Police Chief,` said town supervisor, Democrat Joe Landry in a statement. `I have had the pleasure of working with John for the past two years, and he has demonstrated that he possesses the abilities and qualities necessary to be Police Chief.`
Public Safety Committee Chair and deputy town supervisor, Democrat Liz Orzel Kasper, spoke of the job that Lubrant has done as acting police chief and believes that the town has found an excellent choice for a candidate for police chief.
`John has stepped in and done a great job since becoming Acting Police Chief. He is easy to work with and is well respected,` said Kasper in a statement.
