Schenectady County officials announced Wednesday, Dec. 16, that Dimension Fabricators, Inc., will purchase the former Super Steel facility in Glenville, investing more than $5 million in Schenectady County.
Despite the economic downturn, this has been a strong year for Schenectady County, said Democratic Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature Susan Savage, D-Niskayuna. `When other buildings are closing in upstate New York, we were able to find a business to purchase the building to put people work in Schenectady County.`
CEO of Dimension Fabricators, Inc., Scott Stevens said in a press release from the Schenectady Metroplex that the building will help the company continue with its plan for steady growth.
`We thank our employees for their hard work and for the community’s strong support of our plans to grow right here in Schenectady County by purchasing the former Super Steel facility,` said Stevens. `The building is ideally suited to our needs as it contains cranes, high-bay space and has a rail spur that runs directly into the building.`
Super Steel announced plans to close the Glenville plant last November because of a decrease in orders in the railroad industry, according to a press release. The investment by Dimension Fabricators in the facility will bring jobs to the area and allow the company to bring in additional contracts alongside their facilities on Maxon Road and the former Alco plant in the City of Schenectady. Dimension Fabricators plans to complete the purchase of the new plant by the end of December, starting production early in 2010.
Dimension Fabricators, founded in 1984, fabricates concrete reinforcing steel products including rebar, continuous steel spirals and steel cages that allow concrete to be used in complex civil engineering of bridges, roadways, tunnels and large construction projects. The company has increase employment from 30 to 60 workers in recent years, according to a press release, and the Super Steel facility will allow the company to expand and create 25 new jobs for the area.
`Getting the Super Steel plant back in use after just eight months is excellent news,` said Metroplex Chair and Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning for Schenectady County Ray Gillen in a statement. `We are very grateful for the decision by Dimension Fabricators to stay and grow in Schenectady County.`
`We welcome Scott Stevens and his team from Dimension Fabricators to the Glenville Buisness and Technology Park,` said COO of the Galesi Group David Buicko in a statement. `By buying this acreage from Super Steel, the Galesi Group plans to couple it with the former Burgess site to create one of the best shovel ready sites in the Capital Region.`
The Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency met on Wednesday, Dec. 16, to approve the project, which included an exemption from the mortgage recording tax and exemption on sales tax for building materials and equipment used to improve the building, according to the release. A payment for the tax agreement already in place for Super Steel will be extended resulting in full payment of local property taxes for the five years when the company is eligible for real estate property tax credits, according to the release.
