After a pair of agonizing losses to open the season, the Guilderland boys basketball team broke into the win column in a big way.
Ryan Ochs scored 22 points to lead the Dutchmen (1-2) to a 59-45 victory over Glens Falls in last Saturday’s consolation game of the Saratoga Tournament.
Guilderland built an 18-7 lead in the first quarter and extended its advantage to 47-31 with a strong third quarter.
Anthony Gallo contributed 10 points for Guilderland, which had lost its first two games by a combined total of six points. Cam Girard led Glens Falls with 17 points.
The Dutchmen narrowly missed a trip to the Saratoga Tournament finals in last Friday’s 47-42 opening round loss to Vestal from Section IV (Binghamton). The Dutchmen led through much of the game before Vestal took the lead in the fourth quarter.
We had a couple of defensive lapses in the second half where they were able to get the ball into the big kid [Josh Bailey], said Guilderland coach Ron Osinski. `Other than that, I thought we played well defensively.`
Bailey scored nine points, and Jeremy Liss had 12 points for Vestal, which defeated Saratoga Springs 40-37 in the tournament final last Saturday. Gallo led Guil-derland with 16 points, and Josh Murray added 10 points.
The Dutchmen were hoping to carry the momentum of their victory over Glens Falls into Tuesday’s Suburban Council game against Colonie.
`We’re a work in progress,` said Osinski. `Every game, these kids get game experience.“
