Students at Farnsworth Middle School will aim to raise money for the school, while also getting a chance to show off their poetry skills on Friday, Nov. 6.
The event will take place at the Barnes and Noble at the Colonie Center Mall, and gives the school a portion of the proceeds it helps bring in.
We view the event itself. regardless of who does it, as a way to celebrate the school and celebrate the kids, said Marisa Geraghty, community relations manager at Barnes and Noble.
A portion of the sales that are generated from those affiliated with the school. denoted by a special voucher, will be donated back to the school.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature student artwork and digital research and media projects, according to information form the school.
Students from book club will be at the bookseller to lead discussions in the children’s section and student musicians are slated to perform in the multimedia department. At 4 p.m., FMS teachers and administrators will also participate as guest readers and board games will be explored throughout the remainder of the evening.
The day-long event concludes with the ninth annual FMS Poetry Jam event.
`Students in grades six through eight will read original poems in a coffeehouse-type atmosphere. While the Poetry Jam is typically held at the middle school, performing in this new venue will give the students an opportunity to present their work to the wider community. Poetry Jam runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and all are invited to stop by and enjoy the outstanding work of our young poets,` according to the district’s Web site.
FMS is prepared to provide entertainment, and Geraghty said as many as 20 students will help with the stores normal story time. There are 43 students participating in a poetry event, as well.
`They’re really going big,` Garaghty said.
`We are so proud to have our students participating in such a unique learning experience,` said Lynne Wells, middle school instructional administrator for English language arts, reading, and social studies. `The extravaganza will provide a platform for the children to share their research, writing, and voices with a real-world audience.`
Geraghty said the fundraising program is designed specifically for schools K-12, and is a great resource for those that take advantage of it.
`We provide them with all the promotional material, she said.
If FMS can help raise up to $1,999, it will receive 10 percent the proceeds.
Between $2,000 and $9,999, it receives 15 percent, and more than $10,000 yields a 20 percent donation.
If the school chooses to use the money to purchase books through Barnes and Nobles, an additional 5 percent is added to each interval, Geraghty said.
The proceeds are going to be used to help bring author to speak at the middle school, according to information provided by the district.
`The students are truly excited and motivated to step out and connect with the greater community,` Wells said.
