The popular Delmar Farmers Market will appear for the last time this season Saturday, Oct. 31, but don’t let that spook you, because the organizers will hardly miss a beat transitioning to an indoor venue.
The winter market is to run Saturdays from Nov. 7 to Dec. 19, at the Delmar Presbyterian Church at 585 Delaware Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The summer market was new to Delmar this year, first appearing in the Bethlehem Middle School parking lot on June 6. It was a resounding success, said Market Manager Paul Tick.
From day one we had overflowing crowds, he said. `Hundreds of people came out every Saturday.`
Gone will be the fresh greens a fruits of the summer, replaced with root vegetables. Local, chemical-free meat vendors will still be on hand, as will a range of craft vendors whose wares will make holiday shopping a breeze. Crafts that aren’t made by local artisans will be fair trade items, made by indigenous peoples in places like Guatemala and Cambodia.
`For right now this is what we’re planning so that people can get all their holiday foods and gifts,` said Tick. `We’re super, super excited.`
The plan is not to change what made the summer market so vibrant, said Tick, just to move it inside as the weather turns. Live music, kids’ activities and environmental demonstrations will still be on tap.
`The atmosphere is like a community event at the center of town, where people come not just to shop but to meet each other,` Tick said. `We won’t have a picnic-y atmosphere, but we’ll have an indoor celebratory atmosphere.`
