Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake swept the boys and girls team titles at its own cross country invitational last Saturday at Saratoga Spa State Park.
Led by Otis Ubriaco’s individual victory, the BH-BL boys pummeled the competition in Division III (large schools). The Spartans finished with 57 points, 46 points ahead of runner-up Rush-Henrietta from suburban Rochester.
Ubriaco breezed to the individual title with a winning time of 15:15.73. Lake George’s Steven Petramale was second in a time of 15:22.42, and Plattsburgh-Seton Catholic’s Michael Champagne finished third in a time of 15:25.11.
The rest of BH-BL’s top five runners placed in the top 30, with Scott Maughan (fourth place, 15:32.47) and Chris Fernandez (10th, 15:45.07) making the top 10. Sean Pezzulo was 17th in a time of 15:55.95, and Dan Fernandez finished 29th in a time of 16:13.22.
Ballston Spa placed ninth in the boys team standings with 295 points. Max Groves led the Scotties with a sixth-place finish in a time of 15:37.40. Jake Flynt (24th, 16:08.71) also finished in the top 30.
The BH-BL girls survived a strong challenge from Queensbury to win the Division III team title. Queensbury swept the top three places, but BH-BL had all of its runners in the top 20 to wind up with first-place honors with 45 points, four more than Queensbury.
Riley Wilk led BH-BL with a fourth-place finish in a time of 18:22.27. Molly Pezzulo was less than one second behind Wilk in fifth place with a time of 18:23.08, while Kiersten Anderson finished ninth with a time of 18:34.59. Rachael Cyrus (11th, 18:39.26) and Meagan Roecker (17th, 18:55.39) rounded out the Spartans’ top five.
Queensbury’s Winslow twins dominated the field. Brittany Winslow won with a time of 17:24.37, with Danielle Winslow finishing second in a time of 17:24.76. The next fastest runner, Queensbury’s Morgan Mueller, finished with a time of 18:09.15.
Ballston Spa placed sixth in the girls Division III race with 191 points. Bailey Kowalczyk led the Scotties with an eighth-place finish in a time of 18:30.52, while Becky Martin placed 22nd in a time of 19:12.69.
In the other divisions, Broadalbin-Perth swept the boys and girls team titles in Division II, while Fonda-Fultonville (boys) and Mount Greylock, Mass. (girls), took the team titles in Division I.`
