The Niskayuna field hockey team’s dream of an undefeated Suburban Council season is over, but its dream of a league title is alive and well.
Shenendehowa ended the Silver Warriors (14-1) undefeated run through the league with a 2-1 double overtime win last Friday in Clifton Park. Niskayuna bounced back by beating Bethlehem 1-0 Monday on Megan Wittner’s goal.
Monday’s victory gave the Silver Warriors a season’s sweep over Bethlehem, one of the tougher teams in the league.
Between Saratoga and Bethlehem, they’re the two toughest teams for us, said Niskayuna coach Alison Broomhead. `We played very hard and very aggressive, and everything seemed to click for us.`
With a victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Friday, Niskayuna will clinch its second Suburban Council title in the last three years. Five players from that 2007 squad are still playing for the Silver Warriors.
`I have a really great group of starters who I can trust on the field,` said Broomhead. `They’ve been playing together since middle school.`
A win over BH-BL would also assure Niskayuna of a No. 1 seed for the Section II, Class A playoffs, which begin next week.
`It would definitely be a confidence booster for us,` said Broomhead. `But nothing is ever a sure thing. We can get knocked over if we don’t play well.“
