Town of Bethlehem Police Chief Louis Corsi was handed a 10-day suspension last night by the Town Board for his use of a racial slur during a January, 2006 phone conversation, a recording of which was recently unearthed.
The Town Board voted 4 to 1 during an executive session at the end of a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The suspension will be without pay, though Corsi will be able to use vacation time, according to the town.
Corsi will also have a written reprimand added to his file and participate in a cultural awareness program.
The Town Board condemns the use of racial epithets in any form or fashion, a release from Town Hall read. `The statement was made in a private conversation and did not refer to any particular individual. Had the statement been made in reference to a particular individual, the Board would have strongly considered termination from employment.`
According to Supervisor Jack Cunningham, Corsi’s suspension will be satisfied with existing vacation days, meaning the chief will not miss work.
