Bethlehem Central High School graduate Sam Smith decided to test himself at last weekend’s Liberty Tour Empire State Championship in Queensbury.
Instead of doing one or two events, Smith competed in the 10-event decathlon and came out on top in the boys 15-18 age division with 5,366 points, 54 points ahead of Scotia-Glenville graduate Tim Holzhauer.
The decathletes in my division were awesome, said Smith. `It was two long days of the most fun you’ll ever have this summer.`
Smith finished first in six of the 10 events: pole vault, discus, shot put, high jump, 1,500-meter run and 110-meter hurdles. Holzhauer won the other four events: long jump, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash and javelin.
`[The results] proved to me that I need to get my numbers up [for next year],` said Smith.“
