Saratoga Springs’ Madalayne Smith was the top individual performer, but Shenendehowa was the top team at last Wednesday’s Section II, Class A girls track and field meet at Queensbury High School.
The Plainswomen finished with 177 points to end Saratoga’s six-year run of Sectional team titles. The Blue Streaks placed second with 139.5 points, well ahead of third-place Colonie (65 points).
Smith won four individual titles equally balanced between the track and the field. She took first place in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 14.9 seconds, and she won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.4 seconds. Smith also claimed the long jump crown with a leap of 17 feet, 10.25 inches and added the triple jump title with a distance of 34 feet, 9.75 inches.
Shen’s Michelle Quimby had a productive day, as well. The senior won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches and finished first in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 6 inches in fewer attempts than teammate Maddesen Weekes. Quimby also placed second in the long and triple jumps.
Shen’s Kathleen Klein and Danika Simonson contributed victories in track events. Klein won the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.7 seconds, one-tenth of a second ahead of Bethlehem’s Alyssa Knaack and Columbia’s Anna Boughtwood, while Simonson claimed the 1,500-meter title with a winning time of 4:35.5. Lizzie Predmore finished first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:06.7.
Saratoga’s Keelin Hollowood and Amanda Borroughs earned individual victories for the Blue Streaks. Hollowood won the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:00.9, and Borroughs claimed the 400-meter intermediate hurdles title with a time of 1:06.9.
Colonie’s Krisrtina Lenge was the only non Saratoga County athlete to win an individual track event. Lenge finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.8 seconds, six-tenths of a second ahead of Schenectady’s Dahni Anderson.
Colonie’s Tehresa Coles swept the throwing events in the field competition. Coles won the shot put with a distance of 37 feet, 8/25 inches, and she finished first in the shot put with a throw of 112 feet, 2 inches one inch ahead of Guilderland’s Briana Del Bene.
In the relays, Shen took first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events, while Ballston Spa sprinted to the 400-meter title. Klein, Kelly Preston, Alex Burtnick and Anna Suriano led Shen’s 1,600-meter relay team to a first-place finish in a time of 4:03.2, while the Shen quartet of Burtnick, Predmore, Nicole Irving and Gina Stalica won the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 9:21.2.
Ballston Spa’s 400-meter relay team of Alex Kambourelis, Carrie Mansir, Jennifer Stodgell and Julie Loewenstein won with a time of 50.8 seconds.`
