Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Scotia-Glenville waged a battle for the boys team title at last Wednesday’s Section II, Class BB meet in Broadalbin.
When it was over, BH-BL defeated Scotia-Glenville by 23 points. The Spartans finished with 126 points, while the Tartans finished with 103 points.
Otis Ubriaco led BH-BL with victories in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. Ubriaco finished with a time of 4:19.4 in the 1,600 and a time of 9:58.0 in the 3,200. BH-BL’s Sean Pezzulo placed second to Ubriaco in the 3,200 with a time of 10:02.2, and Scotia-Glenville’s Connor Maggs was third in a time of 10:08.6.
Chris Fernandez, Ben Taylor and Chance Wilk also won individual races for the Spartans. Fernandez claimed the 400 dash title with a time of 51 seconds, while Taylor finished first in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time of 58.5 seconds. Wilk won the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 10:05.1.
Tanner Sellers added a victory in the high jump for BH-BL, which also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Sellers cleared the bar at 6 feet to win the high jump.
Tim Holzhauer swept the 100 and 200 dash titles for Scotia-Glenville. Holzhauer edged Averill Park’s Jaime White by one-tenth of a second to win the 100 dash in a time of 11.6 seconds, and he pulled away from the field in the 200 dash to finish first in a time of 23 seconds.
The other highlight for the Tartans came in the triple jump. Kyle Palombo finished first with a distance of 43 feet, .5 inches, and teammate Nate Crow was second with a distance of 40 feet, 5.5 inches.
Schalmont and Mohonasen also competed at the Class BB meet. Schalmont placed 10th with 21 points, and Mohonasen finished 12th with nine points.
Most of Schalmont’s points came from Coleman James, who won the discus throw with a distance of 148 feet, 10 inches. James also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 3.75 inches, one foot behind Sectional champion John Rudd of Averill Park.
On the girls’ side, BH-BL cruised to the team title with 134 points, 42 points ahead of runner-up Holy Names. Mohonasen was eighth with 37 points, while Schalmont finished 11th with 11 points. Scotia-Glenville took 14th place with seven points.
BH-BL owned the distance events, taking the top two places in the 800 and 1,500 and sweeping the top three places in the 3,000. Samantha Roecker won the 1,500 and the 3,000 with respective times of 4:46.8 and 10:30.2, while Meaghan Gregory finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:19.5. Gregory also won the 2,000 steeplechase with a time of 7:03.1.
Kendra Adams contributed a victory in the 400 hurdles for the Spartans, who also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Adams finished with a time of 1:05.4.
Mohonasen was led by Jessica Ciraulo’s victory in the 100 high hurdles. Ciraulo ran a time of 16.1 seconds in the finals, four-tenths of a second ahead of BH-BL’s Chelsea McBee. Ciraulo also placed third in the 400 hurdles and the triple jump.
Mohonasen’s Courtnee Richardson battled Holy Names’ Klarissa Ricks for the 100 dash title. Ricks edged Richardson at the finish line to win with a time of 12.7 seconds.`
