The Guilderland Board of Education recognized hard work and dedication of district staffers staff and announced the appointment of a principal at Guilderland High School at the Tuesday, April 28, meeting.
At the meeting, the district also presented its annual tenure class, made up of elementary, middle and high school teachers, to the community.
Brian McCann, longtime assistant and acting principal of Guilderland High School has been appointed on a three-year probationary principal, according to information from the district.
McCann will begin serving as principal July 1. His salary will start at $118,275, according to information provided by the district.
Superintendent John McGuire praised McCann for stabling a concerned and troubled staff, in previous months.
`It bodes very, very well for your tenure as principal,` he said.
McGuire said he was pleased the board unanimously approved McCann. He said the building is in `great shape` under McCann.
`The climate and culture off our high school has never been better,` McGuire said.
McCann was appointed as acting principal after Michael Paolino, the former principal of the high school was placed on administrative leave in August.
McCann accepted the position and made some brief comments to the board and to the community.
`I hope it’s no secret what high regard I’ve always held this district in,` McCann said. `Thank you. I am humbled and honored.`
He said he is thankful for the support of the board, staff and the high school leadership team.
`Being asked to take over in the middle of a difficult time last August was a set of circumstances where people, including myself, needed to step up and respond,` said McCann.
He said he believed the school is now headed in the right direction.
`We’re past that; we’re moving past that. We’re on a roll and we have to stay on a roll,` he said. `We don’t plan on standing still now. We’ll keep moving forward.`
He acknowledged the tough economic times the district faces but said the school will make the most out of everything it is given.
Board of Education President Richard Weisz said the district was honored by McCann’s hard work.
