The quest for a seventh straight Section II softball title has begun at Shenendehowa.
The Plainsmen (3-0 league, 4-0 overall) are loaded with seniors led by all-league pitcher Mandy Ferro.
They’re a very close group of kids, so it’s really a fun team to coach, said Shen coach Dan D’Amboise.
Ferro’s skills were on display in last Saturday’s 6-1 non-league victory over Section III’s Liverpool. Ferro limited the Warriors (7-1) to one hit in a complete-game performance that included eight strikeouts, and she helped her own cause with a pair of hits that drove in runs.
`They didn’t put a lot of balls in play (against Ferro), and the ones they did put in play, we handled well,` said D’Amboise.
Lexi Williams added an RBI double for the Plainsmen, who scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to break the game open.
Shen will have to remain sharp in its Suburban Council games if it has any hopes of winning a highly-competitive North Division that includes Saratoga Springs, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Niskayuna and Shaker.
`We’ve still got the one-game-at-a-time philosophy,` said D’Amboise. `The goal (of a Sectional title) is out there, as always.`
Saratoga Springs (4-2) showed its offensive prowess Monday with a 10-4 non-league win against South Glens Falls. Savannah Campbell drove in three runs with a hit, while Kaci Madden had three hits and two RBI.
