One big inning helped the Niskayuna baseball team earn a big early-season win.
The Silver Warriors (2-1 league, 5-1 overall) scored five runs in the top of the second inning off Bethlehem ace Randy Bowers and cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Eagles last Thursday in Delmar.
Gregg Rahn had the big hit for Niskayuna in the second inning with a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs. Nick Valletta contributed three hits.
The victory over Bethlehem came one day after the Silver Warriors suffered their first setback of the season, a 6-4 loss to North Division rival Saratoga Springs last Wednesday.
Scott Hladik had two hits and two RBI for the Blue Streaks, while Pete Furey tripled and singled for the Silver Warriors.
In other recent baseball action, Schalmont ended a two-game losing streak Monday with a 12-5 Colonial Council victory over Cobleskill-Richmondville.
Joe Amorosi drove in a pair of runs with a triple, and Kyle McKelvey added a triple and a double for the Sabres (3-2, 4-4).
Schalmont entered the game off one-run losses to two Foothills Council teams, South Glens Falls (6-5) last Thursday and Queens-bury (6-5) last Saturday.
McKelvey was the hitting star for the Sabres in the two losses. The senior had a double and a single against South Glens Falls, and he belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the Queensbury game.
Broadalbin-Perth defeated Scotia-Glenville 10-2 Monday in a Foothills Council game. The Patriots scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.`
