Niskayuna police are investigating a Friday, April 17, murder-suicide in which 20-year-old Niskayuna man Even Schwarz allegedly shot Anthony Marko, 21, of Schenectady, before killing himself.
The incident is still under investigation, according to Niskayuna Police Department Chief of Police Lewis Moskowitz.
According to Sgt. Eric Clifford of the City of Schenectady Police Department, Schwarz was the boyfriend of Marko’s wife.
It sounds crazy because it was such an amazing scenario [of events] of what happened, said Clifford. `The shooter was the boyfriend, the victim was the husband, and they shared a female, obviously.`
The shooting took place at the home of Marko at 845 Union St. According to Schenectady police, Schwarz pulled up outside of Marko’s home and asked him to come outside to talk. It was then, police said, that Schwarz shot and killed Marko.
`Based on the time of the call [from the girlfriend], which was right around 8 p.m., to the time that he actually shot himself, which was 8:30 ` in that half-hour time frame there really wasn’t that much that happened other than that he shot the one person, went back to his house and killed himself,` said Clifford.
Prior to the shooting on Union Street, which occurred around 8 p.m., the girlfriend called the Niskayuna police to report that she was concerned about him and his behavior.
`She had actually called the police to warn them that he was going to do something and had just purchased a shotgun,` said Robert Carney, Schenectady County District Attorney. `[The Niskayuna police department] was handling that call when they heard about the shooting in Schenectady.`
Carney said that a dispatcher in Niskayuna heard the call from Schenectady police and realized that some of the details from the call matched the call from the girlfriend `warning them about her boyfriend’s intentions.`
The Niskayuna police department sent officers to speak with the girlfriend, who was at Hillcrest Village, where she was living with Schwarz, when Schwarz pulled up in his truck coming back from Schenectady.
`It was at this moment, when a police car pulled up right behind him and two other officers were out speaking with the girlfriend, that he killed himself inside of his truck,` said Carney.
Carney said officers heard the gunshot and initially thought Schwarz was shooting toward investigators.
`To them it well could have looked like he was shooting his shotgun at the other Niskayuna police car that was behind him, so they shot at the car, but their shooting at him had no impact on the event,` said Carney.
The Niskayuna police are still investigating the case.
