If the Colonie baseball team winds up winning the Suburban Council South Division title this season, it can look back at last Wednesday’s game against Guilderland as a key victory.
The Garnet Raiders (3-0 league, 5-3 overall) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Dutchmen.
Guilderland (1-2, 4-2) took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Steven Anderson hit a bases-loaded double and scored on a Pat Quinn double. The Dutchmen tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 5-3 before Colonie rallied.
Kenny Currione had the key hit for the Garnet Raiders during their seventh-inning rally with a two-run single.
Colonie followed up that game with a 10-6 victory over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake last Thursday. The Garnet Raiders took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning that put them ahead 9-6.
Currione tripled, doubled and singled, and Paul Nylin added three hits for Colonie, which is the only undefeated team left in the South Division.
Across town, Shaker is also undefeated in the Suburban Council after the Blue Bison (3-0, 6-0) posted back-to-back wins against Ballston Spa and Columbia last week.
Pitchers Vinnie Dimezza and Nick Marsolais combined on a one-hitter as Shaker easily handled Ballston Spa 10-1 last Wednesday. Derek Gardella provided some offense with two hits and three RBI, while Brian Cary contributed two hits and two RBI.
The Blue Bison ran into some difficulty last Thursday at Columbia’s field, but they rallied to defeat the Blue Devils 13-7.
Columbia hit a pair of home runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead, but Shaker scored four times in both the fourth and fifth innings to surge ahead of the Blue Devils for good. The Blue Bison tacked on five runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Tyler Young drove in three runs, and Tyler McMeel added two RBI for Shaker.

In other baseball action, Christian Brothers Academy defeated Catholic Central 4-1 last Wednesday to improve its Big 10 record to 2-0. Josh Lewyckyj, Chris Sand and A.J. Ragone all had RBI singles for the Brothers.`
