Jacob Johnson is the fastest high school swimmer in New York.
The Shenendehowa standout won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles to lead a strong Section II contingent at last weekend’s New York State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships on Long Island.
Johnson claimed the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.91 seconds, which earned him automatic All-American status. Then, he took first place among public school division swimmers in the 100 freestyle (second in the Federation standings) with a time of 45.72 seconds.
Johnson also swam the anchor leg on Shen’s 400 freestyle relay team, which won the state and Federation titles with an automatic All-American time of 3:08.97. Sean Parnett, Shayne Buckley and Troy Nichols joined Johnson on the winning relay team.
Buckley also won an individual title at the state meet. He took first place among public school swimmers (second in the Federation) in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:53.05, which was good for automatic All-American status.
Buckley and Johnson teamed up with Taylor Nichols and Michael Bidwell on Shen’s 200 medley relay team, which finished fifth in the public school standings (sixth in the Federation) with a time of 1:37.84.
Shen’s 200 freestyle relay team also scored points at the state meet. The team of Parnett, Bidwell, Travis Bueno and Troy Nichols finished seventh in the public school division (eighth in the Federation) with a time of 1:29.32.
Ballston Spa’s Michael Barno and Ian Hogan had top-six finishes at the state meet.
Barno placed third among public school swimmers (fourth in the Federation) in the 100 freestyle with an All-American consideration time of 46.60 seconds, while Hogan finished fourth among public school swimmers (fifth in the Federation) in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 458.75 points.
Barno was also 14th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.08.
