As campaign season kicks off, there is no word yet from the Colonie Democratic or Republican committees about who they will choose to make a run for the town supervisor’s seat that will be up for grabs in November.
Colonie Supervisor Paula Mahan said the Colonie Democratic Committee has not yet announced whether she will be the Democratic candidate for the seat.
If she does run again, and win, it would be her second two-year term as supervisor. Mahan beat Republican incumbent Mary Brizzell in 2007.
Obviously, we work with our parties on all issues like this, Mahan said. `Our chairperson hasn’t announced anything at this point.`
Mahan said she is pleased with what she has accomplished over her first term as supervisor and would be happy to continue, but that she cannot speak for Colonie Democratic Chairman Richard Jacobson in announcing her candidacy.
`We fully expect Paula will get the support of the entire committee and be our candidate in the fall,` said Jacobson.
Jacobson said the decision will most likely be finalized in the end of April, and that the committee is currently looking at candidates to fill the three Town
Board seats that will be up for election in November.
The Colonie Republican Committee kicked off its campaign season with its 30th annual Winter Event on Friday, Jan. 30.
`[The candidates] have not yet been announced,` said Albany County Legislator and member of the Colonie Republican Committee Carl Zeilman,
Zeilman said several names of potential candidates did fly around during the dinner event, but was hesitant to disclose those names since their candidacies are not official yet.
`The committee will make its decision probably within the next two to three weeks,` Zeilman said.
Until then, both committees will spend the following weeks learning of each potential candidate and evaluating whether or not they are fit for the position of town supervisor.“
