One Suburban Council boys basketball team is moving up, while another can’t get off the ground.
Mohonasen remained in a tie with Colonie for first place in the South Division with a 52-38 victory over Averill Park last Friday, while Niskayuna remained winless in the North Division with a 58-38 loss to Shenendehowa in Clifton Park.
Mohonasen’s defense turned in a stellar performance over the first three quarters against Averill Park. The Mighty Warriors (5-1 league, 7-3 overall) held the Warriors to 22 points to help build a 15-point lead.
Nick Battaglia scored 19 points, and Garrett Sisson contributed 11 points for Mohonasen, which has won five consecutive games since starting the season 2-3.
Niskayuna (0-6, 1-9) found itself in the opposite position of Mohonasen in its game against Shen. The Plainsmen (5-1, 9-1) opened the game with a 17-9 run and never looked back as they defeated the Silver Warriors by 20 points.
Doug Milvaney scored 13 points, and Matt Miner added 11 points for Shen, which remained one game behind division-leading Saratoga Springs. Guy Waltman’s 12 points paced Niskayuna.
In other weekend boys basketball action, Scotia-Glenville and Schenectady Christian remained tied for first place in their respective leagues with Friday wins. Scotia-Glenville ran past Glens Falls 53-29, while Schenectady Christian handled Berne-Knox-Westerlo 53-37.
Scotia-Glenville (4-1, 10-1) outscored Glens Falls 32-18 in the second half to pull away for the 24-point victory and stay tied with Gloversville for first place in the Foothills Council.
Jim Janson’s 14 points led three Tartans in double figures. Nick Alescio contributed 11 points, and Joe Ferrari added 10 points.
Schenectady Christian (4-1, 6-1) remained perfect against Western Athletic Conference competition inside its new gym with an impressive performance against Berne-Knox-Westerlo. The Falcons jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, and they cruised from there to 16-point win.
Kelsey Collins had 16 points, and Chris McCarty added 10 points for Schenectady Christian.
Schalmont (0-7, 0-11) remained winless with a 68-35 loss against Colonial Council-leading Voorheesville last Friday. Mark Belles led the Sabres with 16 points.`
