After several behind-closed-door deliberations, the South Colonie Central School District Board of Education has decided to leave the board seat vacated by Vernon Fonda in December unfilled until a new board member is elected in May.
Fonda left the board after serving for nearly 13 years, citing personal reasons that conflicted with the time commitment required of a position on the board.
The board’s recent decision drops the board member count from nine to eight. According to Board President Tim Ryan, the board does not forsee any conflicts in having an eight-member board, which Ryan said has never happened before in the district for as long as he said he knew about, although there is the possibility that a 4 to 4 vote be the outcome on any given resolution.
Should that happen, Superintendent of Schools Jonathan Buhner said, the motion would not pass and would be brought up again at the next board meeting.
