Tough economic times will mean pink slips for 30 employees in Saratoga Springs, who will be part of 550 layoffs across the nation for printer Quad/Graphics, employer of 12,000.
The company cited the ongoing economic slump as the impetus for the reductions.
We’re not immune to what’s happening in the economy, said company spokeswoman Claire Ho. `There’s been a reduction in the demand for print service, and therefore we are taking steps to reduce our operations.`
Around 800 workers will be left at the Saratoga Springs plant, located on Duplainville Road. Those being laid off will know by the end of the week and will receive severance packages, said Ho. Positions in both production and administration will be affected.
Quad/Graphics is headquartered in Sussex, Wisc., the state where 66 percent of its workforce is also located, and is the third-largest printer in the nation with $2.2 billion in annual sales.
The layoffs will take place across five states and nine facilities, and be the equivalent of shutting down one plant. Ho anticipated that the downsizing will mean that some of the Spa City plant’s equipment will be taken offline, though the company hasn’t decided what to do with it.
She emphasized that the company remains in good health.
`Our business is profitable. In fact, we have industry-leading profit margins,` she said. `It’s unfortunate that the downturn in the economy has happened and we need to make some adjustments.`
