The Niskayuna/Schenectady hockey team avenged a shootout loss to Burnt Hills/Scotia-Glenville one week earlier by beating the Spartans 3-1 last Saturday at the Schenectady County Recreation Facility in Glenville.
The Mohawks (3-0-1) scored twice in the third period to break a 1-1 tie. Mike Tennenboym tallied the go-ahead goal less than four minutes into the final period, and Ryan Grant added the second of his two goals with 2:56 left to seal the victory.
Max Muncey scored off assists from Frankie Emmer and Conor Nash six minutes into the first period to give Burnt Hills/Scotia (2-1-1) a 1-0 lead before Grant tallied off assists from Michael Casey and Tennenboym 1:20 later.
Niskayuna/Schenectady goaltender Ben Phillips stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced to pick up the victory. Burnt Hills/Scotia netminder Roland Marlow had 19 saves, eight of which came in a busy third period.
Burnt Hills/Scotia had previously defeated Niskayuna/Schenectady 3-2 in an overtime shootout to win the Saranac Lake Tournament Dec. 6 and 7.
In other weekend hockey action, Mohonasen/Schalmont fell in overtime to Lake Placid 4-3 Sunday at the Olympic Center.
The newly-named Mohona-sen/Schalmont Thundering Herd took a 3-2 lead after the first two periods, but the Blue Bombers from Lake Placid tied the game in the third period before getting the game winner in overtime.
Kyle McKelvey recorded a hat trick, and goaltender Sean Shields stopped 19 shots for Mohonasen/Schalmont. Four players scored goals for Lake Placid.
Burnt Hills/Scotia and Mohonasen/Schalmont host games this weekend, while Niskayuna/Schenectady travels north to face Beekmantown Friday and Plattsburgh Saturday. Burnt Hills/Scotia welcomes LaSalle to Union College Friday and Saratoga Springs Saturday, while Mohonasen/Schalmont hosts Shaker/Colonie Saturday at the Schenectady County Recreation Facility.`
