Sen. Neil D. Breslin, D-Delmar, successfully defended his seat against challenger Charlie Voelker, a first-time candidate, in the 46th Senate District.
On Election Day, Breslin said he had three things on his mind: first, winning his election; second, Barack Obama’s victory in the White House; and third, waking up in the morning to a state Senate controlled by Democrats. Two hours after the polls closed, he said he felt confident all of that would came to fruition by the morning.
On election night, he also rallied his supporters, who had gathered at the American Legion Post No. 1520 on Everett Road in Colonie, in anticipation of an Obama victory over Sen. John McCain and other key Democratic wins.
Yes we can and yes we will, Breslin said of the apparent successful night for the Democrats.
Breslin thanked everyone in his camp for their efforts in his campaign at the American Legion Post.
`Everyone on the campaign worked so very hard,` Breslin said. `We don’t get elected; other people get us elected.`
Breslin said his hopes for the upcoming session include a health-care system accessible to all, and better education programs, including mandatory preschool for young children.
Unofficial polling numbers show Breslin getting 94,005 votes and Voelker getting 10,372 votes. “
