109th District Assembly incumbent Robert Reilly, D-Newtonville, walked away with victory over his seat in the New York State Assembly, as well as a third term as assemblyman, against his challenger Republican and Conservative John Wasielewski as the polls closed on election night Tuesday, Nov.4.
As the votes came in, the totals came to 38, 711 for Reilly and 21,942.
Speaking on behalf of his defeat, Wasielewski said, I’m naturally disappointed, but considering the way the campaign went, I think we did pretty good. Wasielewski credited his campaign as working hard against negative factors such as no-name recognition and having a low budget campaign. `So, it could have been better,` he said. `But it could have been a hell of a lot worse.`
Reilly celebrated his victory at the American Legion Joseph E. Zaloga Post 1520 aside several other area Democrats who also turned up victorious in the polls. `The most important thing, I think, is that the people are supportive of the way I have served in the past four years,` Reilly said.
Reilly also said he would be celebrating his campaign by congratulating the thousands of people who have volunteered for his campaign, also fighting negative factors. `The Democratic Party provided me very minimal support,` he said. `[They] said, we’re not in the business of funding landslides.` Reilly said he and his campaign had to raise most of the money needed for his campaign.
On Wasielewski, Reilly said that he was happy that he ran a `very non-nasty campaign,` and that he fought hard.
When asked if, at any point during his campaign, there was doubt he might not win, Reilly simply replied, `Never.`
