Another year, another sweep for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on the volleyball courts.
The BH-BL boys team capped an undefeated run through the Section II season by beating Bethlehem 3-0 in last Friday’s Suburban Council Tournament final, while the girls team de-feated Troy 3-1 to win Tuesday’s Section II, Class A championship match at Skidmore College.
BH-BL’s fourth consecutive Suburban Council boys volleyball title might have been unexpected to outside observers after the Spartans graduated most of their starting lineup from last year’s Class AA regional championship team. But the Spartans were never challenged within the Suburban Council as they barely dropped a game all season.
I think it has to do with the fact that most of the guys were on last year’s team (as reserves), and they learned a lot from playing against (the starters) in practice, said BH-BL boys coach Paul Sander.
The dominance continued in the league tournament final against Bethlehem, as BH-BL won in three games by scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-16. Mike Pelletier led the way with 14 kills and three blocks, while Jordan Amstrong contributed 33 assists.
The Spartans advance to Saturday’s state regional at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
The BH-BL girls team dropped the first game against Troy in Tuesday’s Sectional final 25-12, but the Spartans bounced back to take the next three games by scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17.
Maria Allocco and Christina Pelletier combined for 24 kills to lead BH-BL into Saturday’s girls volleyball regionals at Shenende-howa High School.“
