It was one of the closer races in the Capital District as initial figures rolled in, but several hours after the polls closed it became apparent that the next person to represent the 112th Assembly District will be Republican Tony Jordan. He defeated his challenger, Ian McGaughey, 29,476 votes (57 percent) to 22,110 (43 percent).
Both were relative newcomers to Albany politics. The seat was unexpectedly put into play when Roy McDonald announced his intent to seek the 43rd District Senate seat.
Jordan has not held elected office before. He is a partner of a small law firm, and hails from Jackson. He targeted job creation and said he would take aggressive action against rising property taxes during his campaign.
The 112th covers all of Washington County along with parts of Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties. In Saratoga, the Towns of Malta, Stillwater and Saratoga fall within its bounds.
There are 93,440 registered voters in the district, and Republicans largely outnumber Democrats, 40,262 to 23,234. There are almost 23,000 voters registered with third parties or left unaffiliated.
