They may not be old enough to vote, but students at Southgate Elementary School and Shaker High School will be practicing their rights early, as a mock election is being held tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 30) in the North Colonie Central School District.
During the mock election, according to the district’s Communications Specialist Greg Coffey, students will be voting for one of the actual presidential candidates that will be voted on during the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Voting will take place during social studies classes in Shaker High School. Students at Southgate Elementary School will vote after an assembly in which they will hear campaign speeches from the candidates.
All Shaker High School students, faculty and staff will be eligible to vote in the mock election, which will include absentee ballots that will be filled out by those students who do not have social studies on Thursday and electronic ballots that will be cast by students via computer at the beginning of their social studies classes Thursday. The results will be studied by students in the Participation in Government class for voter demographic comparisons within the school.
