League: Class D
Head coach: Phonsey Lambert
Key players: Dylan Anderson (sophomore QB/S), Danny O’Rourke (senior WR/FS), Kevin O’Rourke (senior FL/CB), David Mulcahy (junior FB/LB), Logan Valenty (senior TB/DT), Jordan Stubblebine (sophomore FL/LB), Brennan Haley (junior TE/DE), Jeremy Furey (junior C/LB), Ryan Kramer (junior OT/DT), Jack Keller (sophomore OG/LB), Connor Mehan (junior OG/DE)
Outlook: After two decades of not fielding a varsity football team, the Saratoga Central Catholic Saints march back into a Class D field loaded with talented teams.
I expect that we will play hard, said Lambert. `There will be no easy games for us.`
One of the reasons why Saratoga Central Catholic ended its football program in 1988 was because of flagging interest from the students. So, the fact that Lambert is carrying a large roster for a Class D team is enough to satisfy him.
`Right now, we’re a success because we have 32 players,` he said. `The rest will come in time.`
Trying to reverse the Saints’ fortunes on the field will be more difficult. Before the hiatus, Saratoga Central Catholic won only 18 games during a 14-year stretch from 1975 to 1988. Now that the Saints are back, they face a schedule that includes Salem, Warrensburg, Fort Edward and Canajoharie ` all teams that have a shot at winning the Class D title.
Saratoga Central Catholic’s first varsity game in 20 years is Friday at Canajoharie.“
