The first step toward a greener grocery store will be taken today (Thursday, Sept. 4) at 2 p.m. as officials will be present to break ground at 1892 Central Ave.-the location where a new Price Chopper will be built.
The new 60,000 square foot store is labeled by project directors to be one of the nation’s most environmentally friendly grocery stores.
It will also be the first in New York to be LEED-Certified (or, Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council, and is supposed to generate 75 percent of its power with a fuel cell.
Scheduled to attend the ground breaking are Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan, Price Chopper President and CEO Neil Golub, Mayor of the Village of Colonie Frank Leak, representatives from NYSERDA and representatives from UTC Power (the fuel cell manufacturer).
