Colonie police have identified a man who was allegedly removing between 20 and 30 campaign signs which support of 21st congressional candidate Phil Steck from Route 9 in Loudonville, as well as other locations throughout the Town of Colonie.
The removal of signs has been labeled as an attack of one candidate on another, according to a statement released by Phil Steck’s spokesman David Minnis. In the statement, Minnis said that, We are shocked and deeply disappointed to learn that the individual being investigated for stealing these lawn signs has direct personal ties to Tracey Brooks.
Steck and Brooks, both Democrats, are runnning against each other, along with three other Democrats and two Republicans, in the race for the 21st congressional district seat which will be vacated by U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty, D-Green Island.
Brooks’ spokesman Kyle Kotary responded to the allegations, stating that, `This appears to be a case of an overzealous supporter whose actions were not sanctioned and are not condoned by this campaign.`
According to Colonie Police Sgt. John Archambault, the suspect, whom he did not name, agreed to turn himself in to Colonie police sometime next week. At that point, he will be charged with petit larceny, Archambault said.
