Potential homebuyers in the area take notice: There could be a great bargain in the Town of Malta on a two-story, three-bedroom farmhouse the buyer just needs to find a home for the home.
The town is looking to sell the former John Michalko house located at 584 Eastline Road to an owner able to relocate it. The town bought the land it sits on in 2006 in order to make way for recreational uses, and the house is in the way.
The town has allocated $50,000 to complete the studies necessary to develop the 21-acre parcel, but the house has to be off of the land before that process can begin. Selling the house would save the town money in demolition costs.
The competitive bidding process will be open until 10 a.m. on Sept. 15. All bids must be sealed, and should be sent to the David R. Meager Community Center, One Bayberry Drive, Malta 12020. There is no minimum bid.
The buyer will accept the house as-is, and would have nine months to move the house to a new location.
The town made a similar sale in 1995 when it acquired land to allow better access to the Shenantaha Creek Park. A house on that property was successfully auctioned off and then moved by the buyer. The sale allowed the town to maintain use of the Zim Smith Trail for biking and walking instead of using it for the park’s access point.
Malta is also moving forward with plans to develop a 34-acre parcel of land at the Luther Forest Technology Campus into several ballfields. Both projects are in response to an ongoing need for recreational spaces in the town.

In addition to a buyer for the Michalko house, the town is also searching for a volunteer historian.
According to a press release from the town, the responsibilities include historical research, written and photographic historical documentation, education and celebrating our historical heritage.`
The former Town Historian, Teri Gay, resigned the position she had held for four years this past June to pursue her writing.
