After 52 years, many things in the Glenmont community may have changed as businesses have sprung up along busy Route 9W and the community has grown, but the annual Glenmont Fireman’s Fair continues to be a community staple.
Starting on Thursday, July 17, the Selkirk Fire Company No. 2 is once again inviting the community to a weekend of entertainment, games, food and fun. The event is held at Selkirk Fire Company No. 2, which was founded in 1953 and is still housed in its original location at 301 Glenmont Road, off of Route 9W.
There were some changes this year, according to Assistant Fire Chief Doug VanApeldoorn, as this year’s event is being held on a single weekend instead of two. The Glenmont Fireman’s Fair will take place for three days on July 17, 18, and 19, from 6 until 11 p.m. each night.
The annual flea market, which will have full kitchen services provided by the ladies auxiliary and more than 100 vendors, will be held the following week on July 26.
Families can expect the same great community event as they do every year, promises VanApeldoorn.
It’s a safe and fun event for the entire family. We’re just giving back to the community, said VanApeldoorn. `This is our annual fundraiser, and it all goes to the community.`
There will be a cook shed with everything from fried dough to buckets of steamed clams and clam chowder, as well as games with prizes for the kids. There will be an inflatable bounce house and face painting on site, and of course, ice cream and snow cones.
The Bethlehem Volunteer Ambulance Company will also be on hand to give people free blood pressure readings.
On Saturday, July 19, the MacBoston 18 Truck will be rolling onto the scene, too. The truck, which is membership-owned and was incorporated as the MacBoston Truck Boosters, Inc on April 4, 1997, provides a rolling memorial for firefighters who have died in the line of duty.“
