The field of Democrats vying for the 21st Congressional Seat got a bit less crowded when two candidates ended their campaigns today.
Attorney John Aretakis said he withdrew from the race on Wednesday, July 9, to concentrate on clergy sexual abuse litigation and activism.
Pharmacist Craig Burridge also suspended his campaign this week after failing to collect the state mandated number of signatures.
Candidates are required to submit 1,250 signatures by Thursday, July 10 to the state Board of Elections.
The exit of Aretakis and Burridge leaves six Democratic candidates in the race along with two Republicans. For now, the eight remaining candidates will seek a spot on the ballot for their respective party primaries in September.
The race for the seat began early this year after longtime incumbent Michael McNulty, D-Green Island, revealed that he would retire at year’s end.
