The Town Board of Malta has authorized the town to seek a New York Department of Transportation grant in the amount of $1,000,000 to fund the extension of the Zim Smith Trail to Route 9.
The vote came at a Friday, June 27 midday meeting of the board. All four board members present voted in the affirmative. Councilwoman Tara Thomas was unable to make the meeting.
The town will not be obliged to accept the grant if it is approved. Further action would be needed to accept or deny it, probably sometime in December, said Supervisor Paul Sausville.
20 percent of the grant would have to be matched, though Malta won’t be doing the matching. Councilman Peter Klotz said the town is working to identify who could provide the matching funds, hinting that the Saratoga P.L.A.N. (Preserving Land and Nature) group might have an interest in doing so.
