The Scotia-Glenville School District will hold two community forums to hear residents’ comments about plans for upcoming building projects at the schools.
The board has been studying upgrade needs at the six school buildings for the past several months, and a November vote on a project is likely. Board members are now asking the community to weigh in on the preliminary $12.7 million building proposal.
The last major building improvement in the Scotia-Glenville district was in 1999.
We know where we are at as a board in terms of what our priorities are. What we need to know is where our community is at, said Superintendent Susan Swartz.
Communications Director Bob Hanlon said school officials have been discussing for months what building proposal they can design in conjunction with a $935,000 grant the district received from the state’s Expanding our Children’s Education and Learning, or EXCEL, program.
The board had initially considered doing a project in conjunction with the spring budget vote but decided to hold off on any building proposition until fall.
Preliminary plans include nearly $5 million for roof repair and other maintenance projects at all the schools. The district is also looking into renovating the science and technology classrooms, the middle school library, and technology rooms at the high school at a cost of $4.5 million. The third component of the project would repair the athletic fields, including adding artificial turf, a multi-purpose field with track field event area and 500-seat bleachers.
Some residents have already attended meetings to discuss their concerns about artificial turf, which is one of the topics the board is hoping to have more input on.
The forums will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. Both will be at the middle school. Those who can’t attend can send comments to the district’s Web site, ScotiaGlenvilleSchools.org.“
