The Shaker girls lacrosse team bounced back from its first Suburban Council loss of the season with an important victory.
Caroline Rehfuss scored five goals, and Lexi Dalcol contributed four goals and four assists to lead the Blue Bison past Bethlehem 10-6 Friday.
We played well, said Shaker coach Carrie Britt. `The goaltending was strong, and the defense was strong.`
After building a 5-4 halftime lead, the Blue Bison (2-1 league, 3-1 overall) outscored Bethlehem 5-2 in the second half to put the game out of the Lady Eagles’ reach.
Adiranne Devine added a goal, and goaltenders Claire Littlefield and Julia DeBernardo combined to stop eight shots for Shaker. Shirah Fudin and Meg O’Donnell each scored two goals for Bethlehem (1-2, 2-2).
The victory came two days after Shaker suffered a 13-5 loss to defending Section II, Class A champion Guilderland last Wednesday. The Lady Dutch outscored the Blue Bison 6-1 in the second half to pull away for a win in a game that Britt said her team will use a learning tool.
`When you see these teams in Sectionals, you use those early games to figure things out,` said Britt.
The loss to Guilderland is the only bump in the road so far for a Shaker team that went to its first Sectional final last season.
`I’m really pleased (with our play),` said Britt. `They are a very tenacious group of players who love to solve problems.`
Shaker returned to action Monday when it hosted Averill Park. The Blue Bison visit Saratoga Wednesday before hosting Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Friday as part of a busy vacation week.“
