Bethlehem High School students returned from their holiday break to a new concert piano, two years in the waiting.
In October 2005, a team from the Bethlehem music department traveled to New York City to select a new Steinway concert piano. They chose a 7-foot, model B piano, which District Music Supervisor Dave Norman said is an excellent size for a high quality grand.
The piano was delivered on Thursday, Dec. 27.
Steinway makes the `finest concert pianos in the world,` Norman continued. The majority of concert halls use Steinway exclusively, he said.
The school was able to purchase the $53,000 piano through a fundraiser organized by the Bethlehem Music Association, a support group made up of parents, teachers and friends who recognize the school’s music education programs.
According to the BMA Web site, `The BMA attributes its success to the more than 200 donations made by parents, students, alumni, businesses, community members and one extremely generous donation from an anonymous source.`
The donor who still has not been named donated $40,000, which was the remaining cost of the piano after several weeks of fundraising, said Norman.
