Four area boys soccer teams are still alive for Section II titles after quarterfinal victories in the last week.
Niskayuna reached the class AA semis with a 3-2 four-overtime victory over Guilderland, Scotia-Glenville advanced in class A with a 2-1 quarterfinal win against Averill Park and Schalmont shut out Cobleskill-Richmondville 3-0 in a class B quarterfinal game Monday.
Jake Johnson’s goal early in the fourth overtime period propelled Niskayuna (10-5-2) into Thursday’s class AA semifinal against Albany, which needed penalty kicks to defeat Colonie in its quarterfinal contest.
The Silver Warriors twice built one-goal leads in regulation, only to see Guilderland’s Ryan Ashbaugh tie the game each time. Johnson had one of the two regulation goals, with Seth Berggren getting the other.
Goaltender Luke Citrinitti made 16 saves for Niskayuna, which lost to Guilderland 1-0 in its only regular season game with the Dutchmen Sept. 25.
Scotia-Glenville (15-3-1) needed an Elliot Gordon goal in the second half to defeat Averill Park in its class A quarterfinal game Monday. Joe Hlat tallied the Tartans’ other goal, and Jack Lewis stopped four of the five shots he faced.
Scotia-Glenville plays South Glens Falls in Thursday’s class A semifinal at Queensbury. The winner meets either Albany Academy or Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Monday at Colonie for the class A title.
Schalmont (14-6-0) moved on in class B with a dominating performance against Cobleskill-Richmondville. The Sabres scored twice in the first half and added another goal in the second half to put away their Colonial Council rivals. Carlo Viscusi had two of Schalmont’s three goals, with Marc Case netting the other.
The Sabres traveled to Johnstown Wednesday to play top-seeded Chatham in one of two class B semifinals. The winner plays Saturday at Colonie against either Schuylerville or Ichabod Crane.
Schenectady Christian (11-2-2) played its first game in five days when it met Mechanicville in Wednesday’s class CC semifinal in Glens Falls. The Falcons’ last game was Friday’s 4-0 quarterfinal victory over Greenwich, in which Marcus Balters and Jake Bowman each scored two goals.
The winner of Wednesday’s Schenectady Christian-Mechanicville semifinal plays in Saturday’s class CC final at Colonie against either Galway or Voorheesville.
In girls soccer action Monday, Schalmont advanced to the class B semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Cairo-Durham in Rotterdam. Jessica Strang and Laura Snowden tallied for the Sabres (12-6-1), and Michelle Cuomo stopped eight shots in goal.
Niskayuna met Ballston Spa in Tuesday’s class AA quarterfinals, while Scotia-Glenville tangled with Averill Park in Wednesday’s class A semifinals in Amsterdam.`
