Danielle Tetreault had one of those games lacrosse players can only dream about.
The sophomore forward scored five goals to lead Guilderland past Shaker 9-7 in last Thursday’s Section II, Class A championship game at the University at Albany.
She was smart enough to get the right match-ups, said Guilderland coach Gary Chatnik. `On three of her goals, she made some great cuts to get to the net.`
The Lady Dutch (17-3) needed every one of Tetreault’s goals. The Blue Bison (14-6) rallied from a five-goal deficit in the second half to get within two and had a couple of late chances to pull within a goal, but Jen Kaye made a pair of big saves to preserve Guilderland’s lead.
Shaker came out strong in the first half. Abigail Rehfuss and Kat Thomas each scored in the first five minutes to put the Blue Bison ahead 2-0.
Chelsey Newman got one goal back for Guilderland less than a minute after Thomas’ tally, but the Lady Dutch’s offense didn’t truly get in gear until Jen Madsen tied the game with less than 12 minutes left in the first half. Guilderland scored four more times in the final 10 minutes to take a 6-2 lead, with Tetreault providing three of the four goals.
`In the beginning, I kind of got a little frustrated because I missed some shots, but I settled down,` said Tetreault.
Shaker tried to get back in the game early in the second half, but Kaye made two big saves to help Guilderland weather the storm. Then, Tetreault scored off a pass from Courtney Davis on an 8-meter free position to put the Lady Dutch up 7-2.
Thomas ended Guilderland’s 7-0 run with her second goal of the game to start Shaker’s rally. The junior midfielder then added her third goal following a tally by Caroline Rehfuss to pull the Blue Bison within two.
Abbey Fashouer stalled Shaker’s rally with a free position goal, and Tetreault added her fifth goal of the night to give Guilderland a 9-5 cushion. Thomas and Emma Risler tallied late to get Shaker within two goals again, but Kaye stopped Abigail Rehfuss’ shot with less than three minutes left to maintain her team’s lead.
Guilderland’s season ended in Sunday’s regionals with a 12-7 loss to Lakeland-Panas. “
