Republican Alexander F. Treadwell has filed petitions with the Federal Election Commission to challenge Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand for New York’s 20th District U.S. Congress seat. Gillibrand is in her first term.
Treadwell filed petitions in Albany earlier this week and recently set up his first campaign office on Broadway in Saratoga Springs.
Treadwell served as secretary of state under Gov. George Pataki from 1994 to 2001. He created the division of local government and community services and the division of business and licensing services.
He held the position of Essex County Republican chairman for more than a decade and was elected vice chairman of the New York Republican State Committee in 1989.
In March 2001, Treadwell was elected chairman of the New York Republican State Committee. He served as chairman until November 2004, when he was elected to represent New York as a national committee member to the Republican National Committee. That same year, he was appointed by President George W. Bush as a trustee to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Gillibrand and her staff could not be reached for comment as of this writing, but Gillibrand is due in the region this weekend for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of her Saratoga Springs office.
