The Saratoga boys basketball team gained a leg up on the rest of the Suburban Council Blue Division Tuesday by pulling out a 71-70 overtime victory over Shenendehowa.
The win improved the Blue Streaks league record to 5-0 and gave them a two-game lead over the Plainsmen (3-2) in the division standings heading into the Christmas break.
Jordan Stevens scored the go-ahead basket late in overtime and blocked a Shen shot in the final 13 seconds to preserve Saratoga’s win. Stevens finished with 20 points, while Garrett Bishop led the Blue Streaks with 22 points.
Michael Schauffert had 23 points, Tom Kukuk contributed 12 points and Mike Hammond added 11 points for Shen.
In other Suburban Council boys basketball action Tuesday, Mohonasen defeated Ballston Spa 62-43, and Columbia beat Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 50-27.
Cody Robinson scored 16 points, and Mike Gibson added 14 points for Ballston Spa, which trailed 27-16 at halftime. Cameron Couball’s 25 points paced Mohonasen.
Columbia’s defense stymied BH-BL through the first three quarters of its game. The Blue Devils took a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 21-5 at halftime.
Stephen Eames had 12 points, and Chris Pelcher contributed 11 points for Columbia. Jacob Mc-Crindle’s seven points paced BH-BL.
In the Western Athletic Con-ference, Saratoga Central Catho-lic kept its record perfect with a 74-69 win at Galway Tuesday.
The Saints (4-0 league, 5-3 overall) erupted for 31 points in the second quarter to take a 48-29 halftime lead and then fended off a fourth quarter Galway rally to pick up the road win.
Pat O’Rourke led four Saints in double figures with 33 points. Ryan Knotek had 16 points, Zack Carlson chipped in 12 points and Neil Callahan added 11 points for Saratoga Central Catholic.
Plainswomen roll past Blue Streaks
In girls basketball action Tuesday, Shen defeated Saratoga 67-28, Ballston Spa moved above the .500 mark with a 57-42 win against Mohonasen, and Columbia beat BH-BL 60-47.
Shen put its game against Saratoga out of reach with a big second half. The Plainswomen (5-0 league) outscored the Blue Streaks 18-4 in the third quarter and 20-7 in the fourth quarter.
Bre O’Dell led a balanced Shen offense with 15 points. Seven other Plainswomen scored six or more points.
Ballston Spa (3-2, 4-3) pulled away from Mohonasen behind Kate Staulters’ 18 points and Ashley Fabian’s 15 points. Casey Wright added 10 points.
Kate Simpson scored 14 points, and Georgina Farrow contributed 12 points for BH-BL (1-4, 2-5).
Kaleigh Lussier had 19 points for Columbia. `
