At 10:30 p.m., Patti Southworth, Democratic candidate for the Town of Ballston town council, unofficially nosed out incumbent Republican Mary Beth Hynes as results rolled in. Unofficial results late Tuesday night showed Southworth with 1,639 votes, while Hynes earned 1,533 votes.
The high profile race has been plagued with personal attacks, flattened roadside campaign signs and scathing letters to editors to area newspapers. Southworth also filed complaints that the Hynes’ camp violated Fair Campaign Practices, an assertion upheld in part in a ruling last Saturday by a panel run by the League of Women Voters.
Southworth ran for the town council seat last year against Paul Farnan, and lost by about 100 votes. Farnan resigned in February, and Hynes was appointed to fill his spot, and under state law was required to run for a permanent spot.
In the Town of Ballston race for Town Justice, Democrat Cindy Amrhein was neck in neck with Republican John A. Fantauzzi with the unofficial results of 1,479 votes for Amrhein and 1,470 for Fantauzzi.
