The Scotia-Glenville girls soccer team may not have a healthy player with prior goaltending experience, but that doesn’t matter when you can outscore your opponents.
The Lady Tartans proved that in their most recent game last Thursday against Glens Falls. Scotia-Glenville scored its first goal in the first minute and never looked back as it defeated the Indians 7-1 in a Foothills Council game.
Scoring goals has become a priority for the Lady Tartans (6-2 league, 6-4 overall). After starting goaltender Kylah Rodd was lost for the season to an injury, coach Lise Williams has been using Hannah Carroll and Alicia Lewis between the posts, but neither has had any prior experience.
They aren’t by nature goalies, but we’re teaching them now, said Williams.
So far, having field position players in goal hasn’t hurt Scotia-Glenville. Last Thursday’s victory over Glens Falls was the Lady Tartans’ third consecutive league win.
`My team’s been playing pretty well,` said Williams. `Our problem last year was we couldn’t win in games against teams that could pressure us (offensively). We started this year by playing Ravena and Burnt Hills, and we lost both of those games. But then we played Schalmont, and even though we lost that one, we played much better in that one.`
Having players who can get the ball in the goal helps. Scotia-Glenville has a veteran-laden front line with Katie Bosy, Amy Kalinkewicz and Briana Crow, and with some help from players like Rebecca Nardi and Pam Kulak, the Lady Tartans can generate offense in a hurry.
Scotia-Glenville faces a challenge Thursday when it hosts league-leading Queensbury. The Spartans scored four goals in the first half on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Lady Tartans last month in their Foothills Council opener, and they haven’t lost to a league opponent since.
`Field-wise, we’re playing pretty well,` said Williams. `The question is as the season’s gone on, how far can we go with field players in goal.`
Knowlton leads Warriors
Niskayuna and Mohonasen both had Suburban Council games Tuesday.
Niskayuna received a hat trick from Brooke Knowlton on its way to a 4-0 home victory over Colonie, while Mohonasen had a difficult time containing nationally-ranked Shenendehowa in a 5-1 loss.
Knowlton scored Niskayuna’s first three goals, and Kayla Rutherford added a first-half tally to help the Silver Warriors bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Shen last Friday.
Shen maintained its perfect record with its victory over Mohonasen. Sisters Karly and Dana DeSimone accounted for three of the Plainswomen’s five goals, with the others coming from Paige Latino and Meaghan Goodwin.
