Strand Theatre, Hudson Falls NY: Mr. Gone: Performing Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters

May 16 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

On Saturday May 25, 2024 @ 8:00pm at the Strand Theatre, Mr. Gone brings the classic music of Weather Report and the Headhunters to life, along with original compositions and extended group improvisations. It all adds up to an amazing musical experience!
Mr. Gone is a 4-piece ensemble exploring the groove-based music of early electric jazz (fusion), focusing on the groundbreaking music of Weather Report and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters & Mwandishi bands. Referencing the origins of the jam band movement, they connect the past with the future, opening a window to the historical significance and influence of this music.

Mr. Gone is the brainchild of Peter Furlan (saxes – Dizzy Gillespie, 10,000 Maniacs, Frank Foster) Neil Alexander (keyboards – Corey Glover, Alphonse Mouzon, The Mahavishnu Project, NAIL), with Bryan Kopchak (drums) and Charlie Dougherty (bass).

Mr. Gone’s Peter Furlan & Neil Alexander met in 2011 and quickly realized they had a tremendous number of musical influences in common including post-bop, free jazz, and classical, as well as progressive rock, funk, and jazz fusion. They immediately resolved to put together a working ensemble. “Mr Gone” grew naturally out of their shared connections and the desire to explore some of their favorite music.

Focusing primarily on the music of the longest running jazz fusion outfit “Weather Report” (1970 – 1986), they fully explore the material exploiting compositional details and stretching out in extended improvisations.

On their current tour, Mr. Gone is revisiting Herbie Hancock’s “Head Hunters.” Originally released in late 1973, the 23-24 season is the 50th anniversary of this jazz funk masterpiece, the only jazz album certified platinum. The program is comprised of 4 full length compositions which gives the ensemble musical material to really sink their collective teeth into. The show is rounded out with material composed by Wayne Shorter, focusing on his tenure with Weather Report, plus other deep cuts from his extensive compositional catalogue.

$25 general admission. Tickets are available at the Strand Box Office; cash or check only. Online tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
