Halfmoon Town Residents Invited to “The Gift of a Lifetime”

July 17 @ 5:00 pm

Halfmoon Will Celebrate the Preservation of 1700’s Indentured Documents, an 1871 Cemetery Map, and Minutes of the First Halfmoon Town Board Meeting Held on April 1, 1788

HALFMOON, NY – The Town of Halfmoon today announced that it will hold a special event unveiling three historic indentured documents from the 1700’s, generously donated by Mr. Joe Lawrence of Georgia. These invaluable documents, written on animal skin and dating back to 1700, were meticulously restored and framed at no cost to the Town. The event will also feature a Cemetery Map from 1871 and minutes of the first Halfmoon Town Board meeting held on April 1, 1788

The unveiling event, dubbed “The Gift of a Lifetime,” will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 5 p.m., in the A. James Bold Meeting Room at Halfmoon Town Hall prior to the Halfmoon Town Board meeting. Halfmoon Town residents and local media are invited to attend this special event.

Halfmoon Town Clerk and Town Historian Lynda Bryan, who played a pivotal role in the restoration process, expressed her excitement about the event: “These documents are a tangible link to our past, offering a glimpse into the early history of Halfmoon. Preserving them ensures that future generations can appreciate and learn from our rich heritage. I am deeply grateful to Mr. Lawrence for his generous donation and the restoration team’s exceptional work.”

Halfmoon Town Supervisor Kevin Tollisen highlighted the event’s significance: “This unveiling is a testament to Halfmoon’s commitment to preserving our unique history. These documents not only tell the story of our Town but also reflect our community’s dedication to safeguarding our heritage. We invite all Town residents to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.”

The documents, which include the oldest indenture from 1700 with attorney Philip Schuyler, Esq., are in remarkable condition for their age. In addition to the indentured documents, the event will feature a beautifully restored 1871 Clifton Park Village Cemetery map, which was previously in poor condition. The map, surveyed and laid out by John Peck, was carefully unrolled and preserved by the Kofile Preservation Company.

The unveiling will also showcase the 1786 Halfmoon Minute Book, which contains the minutes of the first Town Board meeting held on April 1, 1788. Despite a fire in the Clerk’s office that destroyed many old records, the oldest two books survived, thanks to the efforts of Town Supervisor Ellis D. Smith, who ordered their rebinding in 1959. Halfmoon Town Clerk and Town Historian Lynda Bryan will deliver a brief presentation before the evening’s Halfmoon Town Board meeting to highlight the historic documents.
