SYRACUSE— Shaker High School’s teams secured the top two spots at the Central New York History Bee and Bowl, held in Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 19.
The varsity team of Faiz Shaikh, Haadi Shoaib, Everest Nelson-Holder, and Hannah Berkun took first place, while the team of Shrijan Sedhain, Yunhan Chen, Everitt Li, Peter Gong, and Charles Adelstein earned second place.
Both teams qualified for the National History Bowl tournament in Arlington, Virginia, in April and the International History Olympiad in Paris, France. In the junior varsity division, Shaker’s team of Devesh Kusampudi, Mustaeen Morshed, Khrishnav Parasuraman, and Aditya Milukuri placed third, also qualifying for Nationals.
In individual competitions, Faiz Shaikh placed second overall in the Varsity Division of the History Bee. Everest Nelson-Holder and Haadi Shoaib reached the finals, qualifying for the National History Bee in Arlington as well as the International History Olympiad in Paris. In the JV division, Zaid Shaikh was a finalist in the History Bee and qualified for Nationals.
Additionally, Haadi Shoaib and Yunhan Chen excelled in the Varsity level National Geography Bee National Qualifying Exam, with both earning spots in the National and International Geography Championships; Haadi placed first on the exam. In the junior varsity division, Mustaeen Morshed also qualified for the National Geography Bee.
Peter Sandomire led the way in science, placing first on the National Science Bee National Qualifying Exam and qualifying for Nationals in Arlington.
The students will advance to national and international competitions, representing Shaker on larger stages.
