Sports Scraps

The blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions.

Guilderland girls lacrosse team is unstoppable

rjonas, Sports Scraps
Remember how you could etch Bethlehem’s name into the Section II, Class A girls championship plaque every year? I think you can do that with Guilderland this year.

The Lady Dutch are exhibiting the characteristics that defined the peak of Bethlehem’s eight-year championship run – an overpowering offense that has too many weapons to contain, a defense that keeps opponent’s scoring chances to a minimum and a goaltender who makes the key saves to prevent any comeback bids.

What amazes me is that Guilderland simply hasn’t been challenged in the Suburban Council this season, and that includes its two games against Shaker – a team I thought would be the Lady Dutch’s closest competitor. Guilderland’s average final score against league opponents is 18-5... Continue Reading

End of an era in Schenectady

rjonas, Sports Scraps
Albany's gain is Schenectady's loss.

With Thursday's announcement that the New York Buzz are going to play its World Team Tennis home matches at the Washington Avenue Armory, a 26-year era of professional tennis at Schenectady's Central Park ended.

The move is understandable from an economic perspective. A roof over the tennis court means that matches can take place rain or shine. Though Central Park's outdoor stadium setting is nice with its forest-like backdrop, it can't shield spectators or the players from a summer thunderstorm. When it rained, the team had to move its matches to an indoor facility like the old Schenectady Racquet Club in Rotterdam where there are no stands for spectators... Continue Reading

Bethlehem is a lacrosse capital

rjonas, Sports Scraps
The town of Bethlehem has a lot to be proud of these days.

Besides the success of the high school's baseball, softball and boys tennis teams, it can boast being the hometown of two Tewaaraton Trophy finalists, Mike Leveille and Katie Rowan.

For those of you who don't follow college lacrosse and are unaware of the award's significance, the Tewaaraton Trophy is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in college football or the John Wooden Award in college basketball. If you win the Tewaaraton, you're the best there is. And it's rare when one town could be home to the best players in both men's and women's lacrosse.

Leveille and Rowan certainly are worthy of consideration for this prestigious award... Continue Reading

Baseball observations

rjonas, Sports Scraps
Some quick Suburban Council baseball observations in the final days before the start of the Section II playoffs:

• If Ballston Spa makes the class AA field, I don't know of one Section II team that's going to want to play the Scotties.

Since a 1-7 start, the Scotties have rattled off four consecutive victories to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Among their victims are Shenendehowa, Guilderland and Colonie -- all of whom were at or near the top of their divisions at the time... Continue Reading

I’ve always thought of myself as a person who likes working with numbers. I mean, 75 percent of my job is dealing with statistics (the other 25 percent is divided between dealing with coaches, players and irate parents).

But I have to admit I hate dealing with points systems. It seems simple enough on the surface (one point for a divisional win, two points for a non-divisional win – simple), but there’s a complication when points trump won-loss records.

Section II committee members would point out that without a points system, seeding playoff teams in several sports would be a laborious process... Continue Reading

The best week ever

rjonas, Sports Scraps
Delmar's Mike Leveille may never have it this good again.

First, he scores five goals including the tying and game-winning tallies to lead the Syracuse men's lacrosse team to a 12-11 overtime victory over Virginia in the NCAA Division I semifinals. Two days later, he assists on two goals and scores the Orange's final goal to help SU beat Johns Hopkins 13-10 for the school's 10th national title, and he picks up the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award, too.

Wait -- that's not all. Two days after that, Leveille is the No... Continue Reading
