Sports Scraps

The blog is an extension of my "From the Sports Desk" column in Spotlight Newspapers. The focus will be on Capital District sports, but occasionally there will be national or international items. Sports Scraps will be updated two to three times per week, so it will be more timely than the weekly column that appears in all the print editions.

Pull the plug on the CBA -- permanently

rjonas, Sports Scraps
So, the Continental Basketball Association has decided to end its 2008-09 season early. Smart move.

Too bad there had to be a 2008-09 season to begin with.

In its infinite wisdom, the league decided to carry on with only four active franchises this year. That's right -- a four-team league. Usually if a league is down to four teams, it looks to expand, merge or disband before scheduling another season. Not the CBA, though. It carried on with its four teams.

Not only did it decide to carry on with four teams, but it carried on with four teams separated by hundreds of miles. To compensate for the distance, the league scheduled four-game series between the teams so they didn't have to travel to any one city more than once... Continue Reading

In case anyone was wondering ...

Yes, I saw Alex Rodriguez's admission of taking steroids on ESPN Monday night ... and Tuesday morning. It was kind of hard to avoid, since SportsCenter ran it so frequently. Then again, given what A-Rod was admitting to (three years of steroid use while in Texas) and given A-Rod's place in baseball (possibly the most recognizable player in the major leagues today), I'm surprised ESPN didn't run it on a continuous loop so fans could dissect his every eye twitch.

The fact that A-Rod took steroids for three years doesn't surprise me. Since it was an accepted practice in baseball for approximately 15 years, I'd be more surprised if he didn't use steroids... Continue Reading

Holy ...

rjonas, Sports Scraps
For all of you up in arms over the fact that Albany Academy is the No. 2 seed out of the Suburban Council for the Section II, Class AA boys basketball playoffs, may I present to you a team that was more disrespected by the Section II committee than the Cadets.

I am referring to the undefeated Holy Names girls basketball team -- your No. 3 seed in Class A.

Yeah, you read right. An undefeated team seeded No. 3. Not No. 1. Not No. 2. No. 3, people.

So, who did the Section II girls basketball committee think deserved to be seeded higher than Holy Names? No. 1 Mohonasen and No. 2 Averill Park.

To be honest, I can understand why Mohonasen received the top seed... Continue Reading
